In our age it has become of ever increasing importance that those souls who, by reason of their karma, have been led to Spiritual Science, should acquire a deep understanding of that which we call “The Mystery of Golgotha.” Those friends who were present at our recent Group meetings have already heard much concerning this Mystery: that it had a spiritual pre-history and that it was, as it were, the conclusion of a series of events. It was also explained that at that time in our Earth-evolution there took place the union of the Christ-Being with the body of Jesus of Nazareth, and that thereby a Being walked upon the Earth of whom it may be said, “By virtue of this Being moving on the physical plane the Cosmic Christ was present in our Earth-existence.”
It is important for the whole future of human evolution that through a deeper understanding of this Mystery men should develop more and more reverence and loving and true heartfelt devotion for what occurred through that event for the evolution of mankind.
It has been said repeatedly, and is well known to you, that in preparation for the Mystery of Golgotha two Jesus-children were born. The one was the Jesus who descended from the line of Solomon and bore the Ego of Zarathustra. The other, coming from the Nathan line of the House of David, was a very special Being. In the twelfth year of the life of the latter the Ego of Zarathustra passed over into him from the child of the line of Solomon, and from that time until his thirtieth year the Nathan child with the Ego of Zarathustra made himself ready to receive the Christ-Being. This event is indicated through the Baptism in Jordan when Jesus of Nazareth was permeated by the Christ-Being. At His death the Christ-Being poured Himself out into the spiritual Earth-sphere, so that mankind may become more and more able to participate in that which, proceeding from the Mystery of Golgotha, can pour forth spiritual forces into the souls and hearts of all men.
In a certain sense as preparation this Mystery, as I have already pointed out, had already been accomplished three times before for the salvation of mankind: once in the old Lemurian epoch, then in the Atlantean, and once again at the end of Atlantean times. That is, three times and then a fourth time in the post-Atlantean epoch at the beginning of our own era. That which we know as the Mystery of Golgotha, however, was the only one enacted on the physical plane. The other events, which were preparatory, took place wholly in the spiritual world; but the forces which were thus developed flowed down into the earthly souls and bodies for the salvation of mankind. In all three of these preparatory events that same Being was present who was born later as the Nathan-Jesus and who was permeated by the Christ-Being. This is the essential fact in the Mystery of Golgotha that the Jesus-Being who grew up as the Nathan boy was permeated by the Christ-Being. He who was later the Nathan-Jesus had been present in the three earlier events, but not incarnated as physical man; he lived in the spiritual worlds as a spiritual Being of the nature of the Archangels; and in the spiritual worlds, in the preparatory stages of the Mystery of Golgotha, in the Lemurian age and twice in Atlantis, he was permeated by the Christ-Being.
It may be said, therefore, that there were three Archangel-lives in the spiritual world, and that the Being who lived those lives was the same as he who was later incarnated as man and is described in the Gospel of St. Luke as the Jesus-child. Three times had this Angelic being, who later sacrificed himself as Man, offered himself for permeation by the Christ-Impulse. As in Christ Jesus we have a Man permeated with the Christ-Impulse, so it may be said that three times previously we have an Angel permeated with that Impulse. And as that which was accomplished by the Mystery of Golgotha streamed forth into the spiritual atmosphere of the Earth, so did that which was brought about by the first three events pour into the Earth from out the Cosmos. Looking at the course of our human evolution we note that the Mystery of Golgotha stands in its very center. Everything that went before was in preparation for and pointed to this Event, which was the center-point of human development, and everything that has since happened is a gradual advance in the streaming of the forces of the Mystery into the hearts and souls of men.
The human principle into which these forces stream, if it makes itself receptive, is that which is able to develop its consciousness in the world of the physical plane. We cannot speak to a newborn infant about Christ Jesus; there are no means whereby we can make him understand what He is. We may show him a picture such as the Sistine Madonna with the Jesus Child, or a representation of the Crucifixion, but could we look into his soul we should know that he cannot possibly be approached in these first stages of his life by means of our external methods of education on the physical plane. We may indeed, when he first begins to lisp, accustom him to pronounce the name of Christ, and we can surround him with ideas about Christ, but we find that the deeper understanding of the heart is not yet ready. One thing is clear to everyone able by means of Spiritual Science to look into the child's mind: only when he has reached an age when he can look back in memory, and his Ego-consciousness has awakened, is it at all possible for us to convey to him by our external education even the faintest glimmerings of a feeling for Christ. Nor during the first few years after the awakening of the Ego-consciousness will there be any great understanding. Nevertheless all that we can give him in the way of ideas about Christ without dogma, and all we can convey by means of words and ideas containing something of the Christ-Impulse, will be of advantage throughout the whole of his later life. After the awakening of the Ego-consciousness, though it be only a glimmer, and when we are still unable to work on the child by physical means, he will look upon a picture of the Madonna and Child or at the Cross on which hangs the Christ in quite a different way from before. For just as the Mystery of Golgotha has entered the earthly evolution of man, so is it also destined to work in the advancement of spiritual life on the physical plane. Man, in fact, only enters the physical plane consciously when his Ego awakens. What occurs before this? Three things, which I have pointed out in former lectures, precede the awakening of the Ego in the child—three things of immense importance.
The child learns to walk; that is to say, he learns to raise himself from the position in which he was incapable of lifting his body from the earth level towards the heavenly heights of the Cosmos. He is now in that position which, above all, distinguishes man from the animals. Having learnt by his own inner forces to assume it, he turns his gaze away from the earth at which the animal is compelled to look by reason of its nature and form. (There are exceptions in the animal world, but they are only apparent.)
It is this upright position that the child learns to acquire before the awakening of his Ego-consciousness. In our present post-Atlantean life we recapitulate those things which, as man, we have acquired only in the course of the ages. This power to stand and to walk in an upright position was acquired by slow stages in the old Lemurian epoch, and we now recapitulate it in infancy before our Ego awakens to consciousness. This pre-knowledge is crowded into a time of life when the process does not yet depend upon our consciousness but works as an unconscious impulse towards the upright position.
In the case of the animals which have an approximately upright walk the whole organism is so arranged that they assume this attitude by nature. But like so many of the comparisons which are made this one is incomplete. Man, in the early stages of his life and before his Ego-consciousness has awakened, is destined by means of the rudiments of this Ego to bring himself to a vertical position, to raise himself out of the condition he still occupied during the old Moon period when the line of direction of his spine was practically horizontal, parallel with the Moon's surface. During the old Lemurian time he learnt to alter the Moon direction to that of the Earth. This came about because, during the Earth development, the Spirits of Form poured the Ego into man out of their own substance. And the first manifestation of this in-flowing of the “I” was that inner force by means of which man raised himself into an upright position. Thus, through this position, he is wrested from the Earth. The Earth contains within itself spiritual forces capable of streaming through the spine as in the case of the animal body where in its natural growth it remains horizontal. But the Earth has no forces enabling it directly to serve the human being who, through his Ego after it awakens later to consciousness, can raise himself upright. In order that man may develop harmoniously with an upright position and vertical walk, forces had to stream into the Earth from the Cosmos, the extra-earthly.
If, during the old Lemurian epoch, the first Christ-Event had not taken place, Lucifer and Ahriman would have been able to bring about disaster to the whole of humanity since man, through his upright position, was wrested from the spiritual forces of the Earth. In that old Lemurian epoch, in the realm which is the nearest spiritual sphere to our Earth, the Being—at that time, however, of an angelic nature—who later on became the Nathan-Jesus, was permeated with the Christ-Being.
This was a first stage of the Mystery of Golgotha. The consequence was that in that old Lemurian epoch—but in etheric spiritual heights—the being who later became the Nathan-Jesus, and who otherwise would have had the form of an angel, took on human form (not of flesh, but a human etheric form). In the super-earthly region Jesus of Nazareth is to be found as an etheric angel-form. Through permeation with the Christ he then assumed etheric human form. Thereby something new entered the Cosmos and rayed down upon Earth and made it possible for man, the physical earthly human form, into whom streamed the force of the etheric super-earthly Christ-Being, to protect himself from that destruction which must have overtaken him had not the Formative Force, which enabled him to become an upright harmonious being, permeated and lived on in him. Disorder must inevitably have entered had not this form-giving force, which was able to stream into mankind because of the first Christ Event, poured in with the forces of the physical Sun. This which man received into himself in the old Lemurian epoch has since lived on in the evolution of humanity. We take the right view of a growing child when we see him emerging from the crawling, wriggling, helpless state and managing for the first time to stand upright or walk, when we realize that his being able to do so has only become possible because the first Christ-Event took place in the old Lemurian time for the help and salvation or mankind; because he who, as the Nathan-Jesus, was permeated by Christ, took on as a spiritual etheric being the human etheric form as the result of that permeation.
Yes, my dear friends, Spiritual Science is here that we may enrich our feelings. Such a feeling as can live in our souls when we see a little child learning to stand upright and to walk has most certainly a deep religious background. We should often call to mind why the child walks and realize how we must thank the Christ-Impulse for it. Then we have enriched our conception of the world through Spiritual Science and acquired a feeling for our environment which we could not possess otherwise. Through Spiritual Science we take note, as it were, of the protectors and guardians of a child's growth and development and see how the Christ-Force radiates around his being.
You will have seen from my descriptions of Atlantean times taken from the Akashic Records that our Atlantean forefathers were dumb. The Atlantean man was actually the first to learn to speak, and the Akashic Records show how that came about. Learning to speak is the second capacity which a child acquires before the actual Ego-consciousness awakens, the awakening coming after he has learnt to speak. Learning to speak depends altogether on a kind of imitation, the aptitude for which, however, is deeply embedded in human nature. Speech came to man as a consequence of progressive development. The Spirits of Form poured themselves into man and permeated him, and thereby he became able to speak a language, to live his earth life on the physical plane.
Thus, by means of two principles, viz., the upright position and speech, he wrests himself free from those spiritual forces that are active upon the Earth. Animals are permeated by those forces; they do not in reality speak. Speech through gestures is not the speech of man. If, by means of training or other methods, animals were to be taught a speech similar to man's, special conditions would arise external to their bodily structure. These conditions must some day be dealt with by Spiritual Science, but they are outside our subject to-day. We will restrict ourselves to the normal development of man by saying that human speech was established in man from out of divine heights through that which the Spirits of Form poured into him, and we will consider how he has transformed himself from a dumb into a speaking being.
Man has made himself independent of those forces which spiritually flow through the Earth, just as through acquiring the power to stand upright he made himself independent of the first stream. If he had been abandoned entirely to the Earth, if Cosmic-spiritual influences had not come down to Earth and poured into him, everything connected with his speech must have become debased through the Luciferic and Ahrimanic influences. If nothing had been brought about by Christ, man in the Atlantean epoch would so have developed his whole life-culture—all his bodily organs: larynx, tongue, throat, etc., and indeed even the organs lower down such as the heart in so far as they are connected with the former—that he would only have been capable of expressing his own selfish joy or pain, desire or bliss, in poor babbling sounds somewhat like the utterances of Sibyls or mediums. Certainly he would have been able to utter much more artistic or intelligent sounds than an animal can produce, but these sounds would only have been expressive of that which lived within him, of the bodily processes taking place in his organism. He would have found expressive interjections for these only; his speech would have consisted entirely of interjections. Whereas we now limit our interjections to a few words, the human art of speech with all its subtleties would have developed at that time only as far as a language of such interjections. This disorder in the power of speech in so far as it would have affected man's inner being was averted; the second Christ-Event prevented it from entering human evolution. Through the fact that for the second time the Being in the etheric heights, who later became the Nathan-Jesus child, received into himself the Christ-Being who henceforward permeated the bodily organs of man, man became capable of uttering more than interjections. The power of grasping the objective was brought about through the second Christ-Event.
But the human capacity for expressing the working of the mind in words was again faced with danger. Through the second Christ-Event it might indeed have come to pass that man would have found not only sounds, interjections and words to express the feelings of his inner being; in a certain sense he might also have been able to give out what he had called forth as an inner speech movement. But the power of so describing outer things in words, in order that the words should rightly indicate them, was still in danger from the Luciferic and Ahrimanic influences right into the Atlantean epoch. Then came the third Christ-Event. For the third time that Being in the spiritual heights, later to be born as the Nathan-Jesus, united himself with the Christ-Being and again poured the forces so received into the human power of speech. The force of this Christ-Jesus Being now permeated once more the organs of the human body in so far as those organs come to expression in the power of speech. In this way it was made possible for the power of speech to create, by means of words, actual signs representative of the external environment, thus enabling mankind to create language as a means of communication between the different inhabited regions. A child learns to speak, but he could never do so if these two Christ-Events had not taken place during the Atlantean epoch. Through Spiritual Science we can enrich anew our inner feelings if we remember, when we see a child beginning to speak and gradually improving his power of expression, that the Christ-Impulses rule within the unconscious nature and that the Christ-Force lives in the child's power of speech, guarding and stimulating it.
After the occurrence of the three Christ-Events, which have again been described to-day from a certain standpoint in their influence on human evolution, came the post-Atlantean epoch. In this evolution the mission of the peoples belonging chiefly to that stage of man's development known to us as the Egyptian-Chaldean was to recapitulate what had happened for humanity in the Lemurian epoch; but at the same time to permeate it with consciousness. Quite unconsciously man learnt to stand upright in the Lemurian epoch, and to become a speaking being in the Atlantean epoch. Quite unconsciously he took in the Christ-Impulse at that time because his power of thought had not been awakened. In the post-Atlantean times he has had to be led slowly to understand what it was that he had thus taken in unconsciously in prehistoric ages. It was the Christ-Impulse which enabled him to stand upright and look up into the cosmic heights. In the Lemurian epoch man lived as he was obliged to do. Later the peoples of Egypt, who were not yet fully conscious but in a condition preparatory to the attainment of full consciousness, had to be led to revere what dwells in the human power of erectness. The Initiates, whose mission it was to influence the culture of Egypt, taught the people to revere that power by causing them to build the Pyramids which reach up from the earth towards the Cosmos. Even now we cannot but marvel at the way in which, through the working of the cosmic forces into the whole form and position of these structures, this power of the upright is brought to expression. The Obelisks were erected so that man might begin to penetrate into the power of the perpendicular. The wonderful hieroglyphics in the Pyramids and on the Obelisks, which were intended to point to the Christ, awakened to consciousness the super-earthly forces of the Lemurian epoch.
As regards the power of speech, however, the Egyptians could not even acquire that dim comprehension which they had for the power which enables man to stand upright. Their souls had first to undergo the right schooling, so that in later times they might be able to understand the riddle—how the Christ lives in man's gift of speech. That riddle was to be received with the most sacred reverence by the maturing human soul. This was provided for in the most wonderful way by the Hierophants, the Initiates of the Egyptian civilization, when they erected the enigmatic Sphinx with its dumb, granite form which only produced sound under the influence of the Cosmos when the human beings of that day were in an exalted state of consciousness. In the contemplation of the silent Sphinx, from which sound only proceeded at sunrise under certain cosmic conditions and in certain relations, there came to man that deep reverence by which the soul was prepared to understand the language which must be spoken when it would be brought to higher consciousness how the Christ-Impulse gradually enters into the evolution of earthly humanity. That which the Sphinxes themselves could not yet say, although they prepared the way for it, had to be said to mankind. In the forming of the word-movement lies the Christ-Impulse.
This was announced to mankind in the words:
In the Primal Beginning was the Word
And the Word was with God
And a God was the Word.
The same was in the Primal Beginning with God.
It was there where all things came into being,
And nothing came into being but through the Word.
In the Word was the Life, and the Life was the Light of men.
“In the Word was the Life, and the Life was the Light of men.” These words are to be found where the Gospel was born out of the fourth post-Atlantean age; when man, prepared by the Greco-Latin civilization, had reached the stage when he was to recapitulate in the fourth post-Atlantean age what had taken place before. Just as the reverence for the upright position was recalled in the Egyptian epoch, so now the reverence for the Word was recalled. Thus do the super-human spiritual forces work into the evolution of humanity.
A third thing which the child has to learn before he actually awakens to the Ego-consciousness is to form ideas, to think. This power of thinking was reserved for the humanity of the post-Atlantean epoch; and, indeed, for the humanity of the fourth age in that epoch. Before that men thought in pictures. I shall treat of this subject further in my book, Riddles of Philosophy, which is about to be published. The child, too, thinks in pictures. It was only gradually given to humanity to think in thoughts, this faculty not being aroused in man until the sixth and seventh centuries before Christ. From that time onwards the thinking of thoughts has developed more and more; we now stand in the middle point. It is through the development of this power that the Ego can be grasped. In order that thinking, too, might be united with the Christ-Impulse, that thinking as such might not come into disorder in its activity on the Ego, there came the fourth Christ-Event, the Mystery of Golgotha.
If our thinking is gradually to be brought more and more into order, to develop on the right lines so that our thoughts shall no longer be chaotic and confused, but filled, permeated with inner feeling, if there is to be an increasing development of healthy thinking based upon truth—it will be because thinking has acquired, through the Mystery of Golgotha, the fourth Christ-Event, the impulse which it could only acquire as a result of the Christ-Impulse having poured itself out into the spiritual atmosphere of the Earth.
This outpouring occurred for the first time in the Lemurian epoch when the upright position of man was threatened by Lucifer.
It occurred for the second time in the Atlantean epoch when man's power of speech which, as an expression of his inner being, was in danger of being disordered, was saved.
Towards the end of the Atlantean epoch it occurred for the third time. When the Christ permeated the spiritual being of the later Jesus of Nazareth, the gift of speech, inasmuch as words are signs which represent things in the outer world, was delivered by Christ from danger.
The fourth danger was to man's thinking, the inner representation of his ideas. From this danger man is saved by permeation with thoughts on such forms as live within him—forms such as that which flowed out into the spiritual sphere of the Earth through the Mystery of Golgotha. This can be the case even now if man will prepare himself for it through Spiritual Science.
My dear friends, we have progressed so far in the evolution of humanity that the first words of the Gospel of St. John may be set forth in another form, in the following form:—
In the Primal Beginning is the Thought,
And the Thought is with God,
And a God-like being is the Thought.
In it is Life,
And the Life shall become the Light of my Ego.
And may the Divine Thought shine into my Ego
That the darkness of my Ego may grasp the Thought Divine.
It was not expressed quite clearly, but human evolution strove forward in this direction.
The fourth post-Atlantean civilization began in the eighth century before Christ. About three and a-half centuries later thought had ripened sufficiently to be expressed by the Greek philosophers with such clarity that it led to the Platonic Philosophy. Then the life of man was permeated with the Christ-Impulse. With the dawn of the fifteenth century after Christ the fifth post-Atlantean age began. There was exactly the same length of time between the beginning of the fourth post-Atlantean age and the understanding of thought as there was between the beginning of the fifth post-Atlantean age and the conscious utterance of the nature of thought, that is to say, until Hegel. Human thought attained its highest point with Hegel: “The living and weaving of thought in truth is the causative Spirit.” What Hegel says, in a form so apparently quite incomprehensible, can really be expressed as follows:—
In the Primal Beginning is the Thought,
And Infinite is the Thought.
And the Life of the Thought is the Light of the Ego.
May light-giving Thought fill the Darkness of my Ego,
That the Darkness of my Ego may grasp the Living Thought
And live and weave in its Divine Primal Beginning.
Thus with rhythmical steps the evolution of humanity goes forward. Humanity has not yet advanced very far; even Hegel was much maligned. It may well be said that “The Light-giving Thought did indeed shine into the Darkness, but the Darkness wished to know nothing of it.” When man learns to understand the Life of Thought he will understand what devolves upon humanity in its further existence.
And now there is still something more to be said, as we are standing on the ground of Spiritual Science. Later epochs are always being prepared for during those that precede them. And inasmuch as we stand within the fifth Post-Atlantean epoch, inasmuch as we foster Spiritual Science and have continuously more to contribute to the understanding of living thought, of the thinking which is becoming clairvoyant—we have at the same time the sixth Post-Atlantean epoch.
Just as the Christ-Impulse now streams into the thoughts of life, so will it stream later into something which is indeed one of the qualities of the human soul but must not be confused with mere thinking. The child develops his capacities out of the unconscious. When he attains to Ego-consciousness he enters the sphere in which he can acquire, in which he must develop, all that can come to him from outside through the Christ-Impulse. When the child has learnt to walk, when he has learnt to speak, and when with learning to think, he has begun to work through to the Ego, we can see how the conscious Christ-Impulse, which entered through the Mystery of Golgotha, begins gradually to work upon him. At the present time there is something else among the powers of the human soul which is not yet able to take in the Christ-Impulse. It is possible to introduce the Christ-Impulse into the power of walking upright, and into speaking and thinking; these things are possible because of that which has been done for the civilization of mankind for centuries.
We have now to prepare for the introduction of the Christ-Impulse into a fourth element, a fourth human capacity, if we truly stand on the foundation of Spiritual Science. We must consider this, too! The soul-capacity into which the Christ-Impulse cannot yet be directed, but into which we must prepare to direct it, is the human memory. For in addition to the walking and standing upright, the speaking and thinking, the Christ-Force is now entering the memory. We can understand the Christ when He speaks to us through the Gospels. But we are only now being prepared as human beings for His entrance also into the thoughts which live in us and which then, as remembered thoughts and ideas, live on further in us. And a time will come for humanity which is now being prepared but which will only be fulfilled in the Sixth Great Period of humanity when men will look back upon that which they have lived through and experienced, upon that which lives on within them as memory. They will be able to realize that Christ Himself is present in the power of Memory. He will be able to speak through every idea. And if we make concepts and ideas alive within us Christ will be united with our memories, with that which as our memory is so closely and intimately bound up with us.
Man, looking back at his life, will realize that just as he can remember, just as the power of recollection lives within him, so in this recollection there also lives the Christ-Impulse which has streamed into it. The path which is shown to man is to make the words, “Not I, but Christ in me,” more and more true. And the way will be made smooth through the Christ-Impulse gradually drawing into man's power of memory. The Christ-Impulse is not yet within the memory. When it actually comes, when it lives not only in the understanding of man but is poured out over the whole length and breadth of his memories, he will not have to turn to external documents to learn history, for then his whole power of memory will be extended. Christ will live in this memory. And when Christ has entered into the power of Memory, when Christ lives in that power, man will know that until the Mystery of Golgotha Christ worked outside the Earth; that He prepared for and went through that Mystery, and that He works on further as an Impulse in history. Man will be able to survey this in the same way as he now perceives facts which live in his ordinary life as Memory. He will not be able inwardly to survey the earthly evolution of humanity otherwise than by seeing the Christ-Impulse as the central point. The whole power of Memory will be penetrated, and at the same time strengthened, by the entrance into it of the Christ-Impulse. In time to come, if we grasp Christianity in a living way, the following words will also hold good for us:—
In the Primal Beginning is Memory,
And the Memory lives on further,
And Divine is the Memory.
And the Memory is Life.
And this Life is the Ego of Man
Which streams into Man himself,
Not he alone, the Christ in him.
When he remembers the Divine Life
In his Memory is the Christ.
And as the radiant Life of Memory
Christ will pour Light
Into every Darkness of the immediate present.
We shall be able to say that Christ is in our inner soul-life. Many of us will feel it to be so if we learn to unite ourselves with the Christ-Impulse, even as the human child learns to stand upright and to speak because he has united himself with the Christ-Impulse. Looking upon our present faculty of memory as a preparatory stage, many of us also realize that it must fall into disorder in the future unless it has the will to allow itself to be permeated with the Christ-Impulse. Should there be upon the Earth a state of materialism in which the Christ is denied, the power of Memory would fall into disorder. More and more people would appear whose memory was chaotic; who would become duller and duller in their dark Ego-consciousness if memory were not to shine into this darkness of the Ego.
Our power of Memory can only develop in the right way if the Christ-Impulse is perceived aright. History will then be a living memory because a true understanding of events has entered the memory; human memory will understand the central point of world-evolution. A perceptive faculty will then arise in man and his ordinary memory, which at present is only directed to one life, will extend over former incarnations. Memory at the present time is in a preparatory stage, but it will be endowed through the Christ. Whether we look without and see how as children we have developed as yet unconsciously, or through an intensive deepening of our soul forces look within to what remains in our memory as our inner being—everywhere we behold the living force and activity of the Christ-Impulse.
The Christ-Event which is now approaching us—not in the physical but in the etheric, and connected with the first kindling of the power of Memory, with the first kindling of the Christ-permeated Memory—will be such that Christ will approach man as an Angel-like Being. For this event we must prepare ourselves.
Spiritual Science is not simply to enrich us with mere theories. It is to pour into us something which will enable us to accept that which meets us in the world, and that which we ourselves are, with new feelings and perceptions. Our life of feeling and perception can be enriched if, through Spiritual Science, we penetrate in the right way into the nature of the Christ-Impulse and its sovereignty in man, in the spiritual being of man. It is well for us to think often on the following:—
In the Primal Beginning was the power of Memory.
The power of Memory shall become Divine;
And a Divinity shall the power of Memory become.
All that arises within the Ego shall become
Something which has arisen
Out of the Christ-permeated, God-permeated Memory.
In it shall be the Life;
In it shall be the radiant Light
Which, out of the Thinking which remembers,
Shines into the Darkness of the present time.
May that Darkness as it is to-day
Comprehend the Light of the Memory which has become Divine!
When we take into our hearts the meaning of such words as these, we take in something which is right for us human beings to receive. Just as the plant forms the seed for the next plant life, so do we learn to perceive and feel within ourselves not only the fruits that come to us from former incarnations, but also how to pass over into our future incarnations. It would go ill with our power of Memory in future incarnations if we were not permeated with the Christ-Impulse. Our Thinking is at yet permeated with the Christ-Impulse in the barest measure, and already this Impulse is approaching our Memory. May we learn, through Spiritual Science, to live not only for the transitory man who exists between birth and death but for that man who passes through ever-recurring incarnations. Let us learn, through Spiritual Science, what it means for the full development of the individual soul to have the right understanding, the right feeling and perception for the most powerful Impulse in the whole evolution of humanity—the Christ-Impulse.
Der Christus-Impuls im Zeitenwesen und Sein Walten im Menschen
In unserer Zeit ist es den Seelen, die durch ihr Karma zur Geisteswissenschaft geführt werden, immer wichtiger und wichtiger, einen tiefen Eindruck zu bekommen über das, was wir nennen können: Verständnis des Mysteriums von Golgatha. Die Freunde, die bei unseren letzten Zweigversammlungen anwesend waren, haben ja schon manches gehört darüber, daß dieses Mysterium von Golgatha eine geistige Vorgeschichte hat, daß ihm etwas vorangegangen ist, daß es gleichsam der Abschluß ist einer Reihe von Ereignissen. Gehört haben unsere lieben Freunde auch, daß da in unserer Erdenentwickelung stattgefunden hat die Vereinigung der Christus-Wesenheit mit dem Leibe des Jesus von Nazareth, und daß dadurch ein Wesen über die Gefilde unserer Erde hingegangen ist, von dem wir sagen können: Es hat sich durch dieses Wesen auf dem physischen Plan abgespielt die Gegenwart des kosmischen Christus-Wesens innerhalb unseres Erdendaseins.
Es ist bedeutsam für die ganze Zukunft der Menschheitsentwickelung, daß diese Menschheit immer mehr und mehr Verständnis gewinne für das Mysterium von Golgatha, und daß immer mehr und mehr aus diesem Verständnis fließen Verehrung und liebevolle, tief herzliche Hingabe an dasjenige, was im Mysterium von Golgatha für die Entwickelung der Menschheit vorging. Wir wissen — auch das wurde wiederholentlich gesagt und ist ja bekannt -, daß zur Vorbereitung des Mysteriums von Golgatha zwei Jesusknaben geboren worden sind. Der eine war der Jesus mit dem Zarathustra-Ich, der andere — aus der nathanischen Linie des Hauses David — war ein ganz besonderes Wesen. Wir wissen, daß im zwölften Jahre des nathanischen Jesusknaben hinübergezogen ist aus dem anderen, dem salomonischen Jesusknaben, das Ich des Zarathustra, und daß zwischen dem zwölften und dreißigsten Jahre sich dieser nathanische Jesus mit dem Ich des Zarathustra vorbereitet hat, um durch das Ereignis, das angedeutet wird durch die Taufe im Jordan, die Christus-Wesenheit dann zu empfangen, von der dieser Jesus von Nazareth nun durchzogen ist, und die mit dem Tode sich ausgegossen hat in die geistige Erdensphäre, so daß die Menschheit immer mehr teilhaftig werden kann desjenigen, was, ausgehend von dem Mysterium von Golgatha an geistigen Kräften, alle Seelen und alle Herzen durchströmen kann.
Nun habe ich bereits gesagt, daß dieses Mysterium von Golgatha in einer gewissen Weise vorbereitend sich schon dreimal vorher zum Heile der Menschheit vollzogen hat: einmal in der alten lemurischen Zeit, dann in der atlantischen Zeit, dann noch einmal gegen Ende der atlantischen Zeit - das waren drei Male -, dann eben das vierte Mal so, wie wir es kennen im Beginne unserer Zeitrechnung in der nachatlantischen Zeit. Was wir das Mysterium von Golgatha nennen, hat sich aber einzig und allein auf dem physischen Plan zugetragen, die anderen Ereignisse, welche die vorbereitenden waren, haben sich ganz in der geistigen Welt zugetragen. Aber die Kräfte, die sich dabei ausgebildet haben, dasjenige, was geschehen ist, das ist zum Heile der Menschheit heruntergeflossen in die irdischen Seelen und Leiber. Und bei all diesen vorbereitenden Ereignissen zu dem Mysterium von Golgatha war es wiederum dieselbe Wesenheit, die dann als nathanischer Jesusknabe geboren worden ist, die durrchdrungen worden ist von der Christus-Wesenheit. Das ist ja das Wesentliche an dem Mystetium von Golgatha, daß diese Jesuswesenheit, die herangewachsen ist als der nathanische Knabe, durchdrungen worden ist von der ChristusWesenheit. Aber auch bei den drei früheren Ereignissen war diese spätere nathanische Jesuswesenheit da, nur war sie nicht als physischer Mensch inkarniert. Sie lebte als geistige, als erzengelartige Wesenheit in den geistigen Welten. Und in den geistigen Welten ist sie als in Vorstufen des Mysteriums von Golgatha während der lemurischen Zeit und zweimal während der atlantischen Zeit durchzogen worden von der Christus-Wesenheit.
So daß man sagen kann: Es gab gleichsam drei Engelleben in der geistigen Welt. Die Wesenheit, die dieses Engel- und Erzengelleben geführt hat, war im Grunde dieselbe, die später als Mensch geboren worden ist und als Jesusknabe im Lukas-Evangelium geschildert worden ist. Dreimal brachte sich diese Engelwesenheit, die später als Mensch sich zum Opfer brachte, für das Eindringen des ChristusImpulses zum Opfer. Wie wir in dem Christus Jesus einen vom Christus-Impuls durchzogenen Menschen haben, so können wir sagen, wir haben dreimal vorher einen von dem Christus-Impuls durchzogenen Engel. Und so, wie dasjenige, was durch das Mysterium von Golgatha geschehen ist, ausgeströmt ist in die geistige Erdenatmosphäre, so strömte ein, allerdings aus dem Kosmos herein, das, was dutch die drei ersten Ereignisse geschehen ist. Wenn wir auf den Gang unserer Menschheitsentwickelung blicken, wie im Mittelpunkte dieser Menschheitsentwickelung das Mysterium von Golgatha drinnensteht, so können wir eigentlich uns sagen: Mit diesem Mysterium von Golgatha ist eben ein solcher Mittelpunkt der irdischen Entwickelung gegeben. Alles, was vorher geschieht, weist hin wie vorbereitend auf dieses Mysterium von Golgatha. Und alles, was nachher geschehen ist, ist ein nach und nach fortschreitendes Einströmen der Kräfte des Mysteriums von Golgatha in die menschlichen Seelen und in die menschlichen Herzen.
Wenn wir genauer prüfen, welchem Wesensglied im Menschen gegeben wurde dasjenige, was von der Kraft des Mysteriums von Golgatha ausströmt, so können wir sagen: Dem menschlichen Wesensglied strömt zu, wenn es sich öffnet, die Kraft des Mysteriums von Golgatha, dem menschlichen Wesensglied, das in der Welt des physischen Planes sein Bewußtsein entwickeln kann. Ist es denn nicht so? Zu dem Kinde, das eben geboren worden ist, können wir noch nicht sprechen von dem Christus Jesus. Es gibt keinen Weg, wie wir dem Kinde verständlich machen können, was der Christus Jesus ist. Und wenn wir die Augen des Kindes verweilen lassen würden auf irgendeinem Bildnis, sei es ein Bildnis wie die Sixtinische Madonna mit dem Jesusknaben oder sei es der Kruzifixus, wir würden bemerken, wenn wir hineinsehen könnten in die Seele des Kindes, daß wir in den allerersten Zeiten des kindlichen Lebens noch nicht an sie herankommen können mit unseren äußeren Erziehungsmitteln des physischen Planes. Wir können zwar schon von der Zeit an, wo das Kind gewissermaßen zu lallen beginnt, es gewöhnen, den Christus-Namen auszusprechen, wir können ihm Vorstellungen beibringen, die auf den Christus hinweisen. Aber das tiefere Herzensverständnis werden wir in den ersten Zeiten des menschlichen Kindeslebens sich noch nicht bereiten fühlen. Und eines ist für jeden klar, der mit den Mitteln der Geisteswissenschaft hineinzuleuchten vermag in das kindliche Gemüt: die schwächste Art, wie wir durch äußere Erziehungsmittel das Christus-Empfinden zu einem Aufdämmern bringen können, die schwächste Art tritt wirklich auch erst ein von dem Zeitpunkte an, wo das Kind an den Punkt seines Lebens herantritt, bis zu welchem es sich später zurückerinnert: an dem sein Ich-Bewußtsein erwacht. Es wird gewiß auch in den ersten Jahren, nachdem das Ich-Bewußtsein erwacht ist, kein großes Verständnis da sein. Aber alles, was wir da übermitteln an Christus-Vorstellungen, ohne daß wir es in die Dogmatik hineinführen, was wir so vermitteln, daß in den Worten und Vorstellungen etwas von dem Leben des Christus-Impulses ist, das kommt dem Menschen, der aus diesem Kinde wird, in dem ganzen späteren Leben zugute. Nach dem Erwachen des Ich-Bewußtseins können wir schon einzelnes tun, wenn auch nur ein dämmerndes Bewußtsein vorhanden ist. Nach dem Erwachen des Ich-Bewußtseins sieht zum Beispiel das Kind, wenn wir auch noch nicht beginnen können mit physischen Mitteln auf es einzuwirken, zu der Sixtinischen Madonna und zu dem Kreuze mit dem Christus daran ganz anders auf als vorher. Denn so, wie das Mysterium von Golgatha hereingetretem ist in die irdische Menschheitsentwickelung, so ist es dazu bestimmt, in den Fortschritt des Geisteslebens auf dem physischen Plane zu wirken. Und eigentlich betritt der Mensch bewußt den physischen Plan erst, wenn sein Ich erwacht. Was ist nun vorher?
Drei Dinge gehen dem Ich-Erwachen beim Kinde voran, drei Dinge, auf die ich auch schon hingewiesen habe in früheren Vorträgen, drei Dinge, die von ungeheurer Wichtigkeit sind. Das Kind lernt gehen, das heißt, es lernt sich erheben aus der Lage, in der es noch unfähig ist, seine Leibesrichtung von der Erde ab in die Himmelshöhen des Kosmos hinauf zu richten. Es lernt aus der einen Lage in jene andere sich bringen, durch die sich der Mensch in erster Linie vom Tier unterscheidet. Es lernt durch eigene innere Kraft sich die aufrechte Stellung zu geben, den Blick abzuwenden vom Irdischen, zu dem ihn das Tier durch seine ganze Bestimmung und Gestalt dennoch gerichtet haben muß, denn die Ausnahmen sind nur scheinbar. Die aufrechte Stellung ist es, die das Kind lernt, bevor das Ich-Bewußtsein erwacht. Wir wiederholen wirklich in unserem jetzigen nachatlantischen Leben die Dinge, die wir als Mensch überhaupt uns erst angeeignet haben im Laufe der Zeit. Was wir uns während der alten lemurischen Zeit erst nach und nach angeeignet haben, das Aufrechtgehen-Lernen, das Aufrechtstehen-Lernen, das wiederholen wir, bevor unser Ich bewußt erwacht, jetzt im kindlichen Alter. Das ist hineingedrängt in die Zeit, wo es noch nicht von unserem Bewußtsein abhängt, wo es noch als unbewußte Aufrichtekraft wirkt. Jene Tiere, welche einen annähernd vertikalen, annähernd nach oben gerichteten Gang haben, haben den ganzen Organismus so eingerichtet, daß sie von Natur in diese doch im Grunde nicht ganz aufrechte Lage kommen. Wie so mancher Vergleich, würde aber auch dieser irren. Der Mensch ist dazu berufen, in der ersten Zeit seines Lebens, bevor sein Ich-Bewußtsein erwacht, aus der Veranlagung dieses Ich heraus sich in die aufrechte, die vertikale Stellung zu bringen, sich herauszuheben aus der Lage, in der er noch in der alten Mondenzeit war. Da war die Richtungslinie seines Rückgrates parallel der Oberfläche des Mondes gerichtet, war in der Hauptlinie horizontal. In der alten lemurischen Zeit lernte der Mensch die Mondrichtung in die Erdrichtung verwandeln. Das kam davon, weil während der Erdenentwickelung erst die Geister der Form dem Menschen aus eigener Substanz heraus sein Ich einflößten. Und die erste Manifestation dieser Ich-Einflößung ist jene innere Kraft, durch welche der Mensch sich aufrichtet. So ist der Mensch durch seine Lage der Erde entrissen. Die Erde selber hat in sich geistige Kräfte, welche durchströmen können das Rückgrat, wenn es im natürlichen Wachstum, wie beim Tierleib, horizontal bleibt. Aber die Erde hat keine Kräfte, um von sich aus unmittelbar zu dienen dem Menschenwesen, das durch sein Ich, dessen Bewußtsein später erwacht, vertikal gerichtet sein kann. Damit der Mensch sich harmonisch entwickeln kann bei aufrechtem, vertikalem Gang, müssen Kräfte aus dem Kosmos, aus dem Außerirdischen hereinströmen. Luzifer und Ahriman hätten alle menschliche Entwickelung in Unordnung bringen können dadurch, daß der Mensch durch seine aufrechte Stellung von den geistigen Kräften des Irdischen herausgerissen ist, wenn nicht in der alten lemurischen Zeit das erste ChristusEreignis eingetreten wäre.
In dieser alten Jemurischen Zeit hat stattgefunden in demjenigen Reiche, das als geistiges Reich das nächste ist unserem Erdenreiche, die Durchdringung jenes Wesens, aber als einer Art von Engelwesen, das später der nathanische Jesus geworden ist, mit dem ChristusWesen. Das war eine Vorstufe des Mysteriums von Golgatha. Die Folge davon war, daß in dieser alten lemurischen Zeit — aber in ätherischen, geistigen Höhen - der spätere nathanische Jesus, der sonst die Gestalt des Engels gehabt haben würde, natürlich nicht fleischliche, sondern ätherische Menschengestalt annahm. In der überirdischen Region — aber in der nächst überirdischen Region - als ätherische Engelsgestalt ist der Jesus von Nazareth zu finden. Durch das Durchziehen mit dem Christus hat er ätherische Menschengestalt angenommen. Damit ist ein Neues in den Kosmos hineingedrungen, das jetzt ausstrahlt auf die Erde und dem Menschen, der physischen ErdenMenschenform, in die hineinströmte die Kraft der ätherischen überirdischen Christus-Wesenheit, möglich macht, sich zu schützen vor jener Zerstörung, die hätte eindringen müssen, wenn nicht aus dem Kosmos hätte hereinstrahlen und den Menschen durchdringen können, so daß sie in ihm lebt, die Gestaltungskraft, die ihn ein aufrechtes, ordentliches Wesen werden läßt. Unordnung hätte kommen müssen, wenn nicht hereingeströmt wäre mit der physischen Sonnenkraft die Kraft jener Formung, jener Gestaltung, die dadurch hetreinstrahlen kann, daß das erste Christus-Ereignis stattgefunden hat. Das, was der Mensch dadurch in sich hereinbekam, das lebte seit der alten lemurischen Zeit in der Entwickelung der Menschheit. Und wir schauen recht hin auf ein sich entwickelndes Menschenkind, wenn wir in dem Moment, wo das Kind aus dem kriechenden, rutschenden, unbehilflichen Zustande sich aufrichtet und zum ersten Mal steht oder geht, wenn wir in diesem Augenblick sagen: Recht und zum Heil der Menschheit kann das doch nur aus dem Grunde geschehen, weil in der alten lemurischen Zeit das erste Christus-Ereignis stattgefunden hat, weil derjenige, der als nathanischer Jesus sich durchdrungen hat mit dem Christus, damals in der lemurischen Zeit als geistig-ätherisches Wesen durch die Durchdringung mit dem Christus menschlichätherische Form angenommen hat.
Ja, daß wir unsere Empfindungen bereichern, dazu ist Geisteswissenschaft da. Solch eine Empfindung, die in unserer Seele leben kann, wenn wir ein Kind aufrechtstehen und gehen lernen sehen, solch eine Empfindung hat ganz gewiß tiefe religiöse Hintergründe. Wir sollen uns später öfter erinnern, warum das Kind geht, und dann denken, wie das dem Christus-Impuls zu verdanken ist. Dann haben wit durch Geisteswissenschaft unsere Weltanschauung bereichert, haben uns eine Empfindung angeeignet für das, was unsere Umgebung ist, die wir sonst nicht haben könnten. Wir merken gleichsam durch Geisteswissenschaft die Schützer, die Hüter kindlichen Wachstums und kindlichen Werdens. Wir merken, wie die Christus-Kraft dieses kindliche Wesen und kindliche Werden umstrahlt.
Aus meiner Darstellung aus der Akasha-Chronik für die lemurische Zeit, wo von den lemurischen Vorfahren die Rede ist, werden Sie gesehen haben, daß diese Vorfahren stumm waren. Der atlantische Mensch hat eigentlich erst sprechen gelernt. Es ist in jenen Aufsätzen über die Akasha-Chronik ausgeführt, wie das gekommen ist. Das ist die zweite der Fähigkeiten, die sich das Kind aneignet, bevor das eigentliche Ich-Bewußtsein aufwacht: das Sprechenlernen. Das Erwachen des Ich-Bewußtseins folgt erst auf das Sprechenlernen. Das Sprechenlernen beruht durchaus bloß auf einer Art Nachahmung, zu der allerdings die Anlagen tief in der menschlichen Natur ruhen. Dieses Sprechen ist wiederum eine menschliche Fähigkeit, die in den Erdenmenschen hineingekommen ist dadurch, daß er sich vorwärtsentwickelt hat. Dadurch, daß die Geister der Form ihn durchgossen, durchdrungen haben, ist er imstande, eine Sprache zu sprechen, sein Erdenleben auf dem physischen Plan zu leben. Damit entreißt er sich durch zwei Elemente denjenigen geistigen Kräften, die auf der Erde wirksam sind. Die Tiere lernen nicht in Wirklichkeit sprechen, sie sind von diesen geistigen Kräften der Erde durchdrungen. Selbst das Sprechen durch Gebärden ist bei den Tieren nicht das Sprechen des Menschen. Und würde man durch Dressur oder andere Mittel dem Tiere ein ähnliches Sprechen beibringen, so würden außerhalb seines Leibes Verhältnisse eintreten, die von der Geisteswissenschaft erst besprochen werden müßten, was heute außerhalb unseres Themas bleibt. Wir wollen bei der normalen Entwickelung des Menschen stehenbleiben und sagen, daß dieses menschliche Sprechen schon veranlagt war im Menschen aus göttlichen Höhen herunter durch das, was die Geister der Form eingegossen haben. Wir wollen bei diesem stehenbleiben und ausschauen, wie der Mensch sich aus der Stummheit zum sprechenden Wesen verwandelt hat. Unabhängig hat er sich dadurch von den Kräften gemacht, die die Erde geistig durchspülen, wie er durch das aufrechte Verhalten sich unabhängig von der ersten Strömung gemacht hat. Durch den luziferischen und ahrimanischen Einfluß hätte im Sprechen alles unedel werden müssen, wenn der Mensch nur der Erde überlassen worden wäre, wenn nicht kosmischgeistige Einflüsse, die zur Erde herunterkamen, in den Menschen sich hereinergossen hätten. Der Mensch würde seine ganze Lebenskultur so entwickelt haben, alle seine Leibesorgane, Kehlkopf, Zunge, Rachen und so weiter, ja auch die tieferliegenden Organe wie Herz und so weiter, insofern sie damit zusammenhängen, der Mensch würde sie so entwickelt haben in der atlantischen Zeit, wenn nichts geschehen wäre durch den Christus, daß der Mensch nur fähig gewesen sein würde, in ärmlichem Lallen auszusprechen - etwa nach Sibyllen- oder Medienart — dasjenige, was ihm egoistisch Schmerz, Freude, Lust, Wollust bereitet. Der Mensch würde zwar viel künstlichere Laute als das Tier hervorbringen können, aber in seinen Lauten würde er nur Ausdrücke gefunden haben für das, was ihm im Innern lebt. Für das, was im Organismus als leibliche Vorgänge vorgeht, würde er die lebendigen Empfindungsworte gefunden haben. Die ganze Sprache wäre eine Summe von Interjektionen geworden. Während wir jetzt unsere Empfindungsworte auf ein kleines Maß zusammendrängen, wäre die menschliche Sprachkunst mit aller Kompliziertheit nur zu Interjektionen hinaufentwickelt worden. Das wurde abgewendet von der menschlichen Entwickelung. Die Unordnung in dieser Sprachkraft - soweit diese Unordnung das Innere des Menschen zum Ausdruck hat — wurde abgewendet durch das zweite Christus-Ereignis, dadurch, daß sich diese Wesenheit in Ätherhöhe, die später der nathanische Jesusknabe wurde, das zweite Mal durchdrang mit der ChristusWesenheit, und daß sie eine solche Wesenheit annahm, die nunmehr die Leibesorgane des Menschen so durchdrang, daß der Mensch jetzt fähig wurde, etwas anderes als bloße Empfindungsworte auszustoßen. Daß er fähig wurde, das Objektive zu ergreifen, das ist durch das zweite Christus-Ereignis ermöglicht worden.
Und noch immer stand die Sprache, die Sprachkraft, die menschliche Fähigkeit, Gemütsbewegungen in Worte umzuprägen, vor einer Gefahr. Durch das zweite Christus-Ereignis hätte es wohl geschehen können, daß der Mensch nicht nur Töne, Interjektionen, Empfindungsworte gefunden hätte für sein Inneres, sondern daß er in gewisser Weise hätte loslösen können das, was er als innere Sprachbewegung hervorgerufen hat. Aber die äußeren Dinge durch Worte zu bezeichnen, so daß die Worte richtige Zeichen sein können für die äußeren Dinge, das war immer noch gefährdet durch die luziferischen und ahrimanischen Einflüsse bis in die atlantische Zeit hinein. Da geschah das dritte Christus-Ereignis. Zum dritten Mal verband sich die Wesenheit in den geistigen Höhen, welche später als nathanischer Jesus geboren wurde, mit der Christus-Wesenheit, und ergoß sich wiederum mit den Kräften, die sie jetzt angenommen hatte, in die menschliche Sprachfähigkeit. Die Kraft dieser Christus Jesus-Wesenheit durchdrang jetzt neuerdings ein zweites Mal im menschlichen Leibe Organe, insofern diese Organe in der Sprachkraft zum Ausdruck kommen. Damit war der Sprachkraft die Möglichkeit gegeben, mit den Worten wirkliche Zeichen zu schaffen für das, was äußere Umgebung ist, und dadurch über die einzelnen Gebiete der Menschheit die Sprache als Verständigungsmittel zu schaffen. Das Kind könnte nimmermehr sprechen lernen, wenn nicht in der atlantischen Zeit diese beiden Christus-Ereignisse eingetreten wären. Und wir bereichern wiederum durch die Geisteswissenschaft unser Empfinden, wenn wir, wenn das Kind anfängt zu sprechen und immer mehr sich vervollkommnet im Sprechen, wenn wir da bedenken, wie im Unbewußten drinnen walten die Christus-Impulse, wie da beschützend und fördernd die Christus-Kraft in der Sprachkraft lebt.
Dann kam die nachatlantische Zeit, nachdem die drei ChristusEreignisse stattgefunden hatten, die ich von einem gewissen Standpunkte auch heute wiederum geschildert habe in ihrem Einfluß auf die menschliche Entwickelung.
In der nachatlantischen Entwickelung haben zunächst die Völker, die vorzugsweise jenem menschlichen Entwickelungszustande angehörten, den wir die ägyptisch-chaldäische Kultur nennen, die Aufgabe, zu wiederholen, was in der alten lemurischen Zeit für die Menschheit geschehen ist, aber das mit Bewußtsein zu durchdringen. Ganz unbewußt lernt der Mensch ein aufrechtes Wesen zu sein in der lemurischen Zeit, lernt er ein sprechendes Wesen zu sein in der atlantischen Zeit. Ganz unbewußt nimmt er, weil seine Denkkraft noch nicht erwacht war in dieser Zeit, den Christus-Impuls auf. Langsam sollte er hingeführt werden in der nachatlantischen Zeit, zu verstehen, was er in der Vorzeit unbewußt aufgenommen hatte. Was ihn aufrecht hinausschauen ließ in kosmische Höhen, das war der Christus-Impuls. Er erlebte dies unbewußt, wie er es erleben mußte in der lemurischen Zeit. Dann sollten, noch nicht vollbewußt, aber doch wie in einer Vorbereitung zum vollen Bewußtsein, die Völker Ägyptens hingeführt werden, zu verehren dasjenige, was in der Aufrichtekraft des Menschen lebt. Daß sie es verehren lernten, dafür sorgten die Eingeweihten, welche die ägyptische Kultur zu beeinflussen hatten, dadurch, daß sie die Menschen aufrichten ließen die Pyramiden, die von der Erde in den Kosmos hinausragen. Jetzt noch haben wir zu bewundern, wie durch das Hereinwirken der kosmischen Kräfte in die ganze Form und Lage des Baues der Pyramiden diese Aufrichtekraft zum Ausdruck gebracht wurde. Die Obelisken sollten hingestellt werden, damit der Mensch anfängt einzudtingen in dasjenige, was Auftichtekraft ist. Die wunderbaren Hieroglyphen in den Pyramiden und an den Obelisken, die auf den Christus hindeuten sollten, erweckten die überirdischen Kräfte aus der lemurischen Zeit. Aber selbst zu einem solchen dunkeln Verständnis, wie die Ägypter kommen konnten bezüglich der Auftichtekraft, konnten sie nicht kommen bezüglich der Sprachkraft. Da sollte erst ihr Gemüt die richtige Schulung für die Empfindung erlangen, damit in späteren Zeiten man einsehen könne das Rätsel, wie der Christus lebt in der Wortbegabung des Menschen. Das sollte aufgenommen werden mit der heiligsten Scheu in der reifenden Menschenseele. Dafür sorgten in wunderbarer Art die Hierophanten, die Eingeweihten der ägyptischen Kultur, indem sie hinstellten die rätselhafte Sphinx mit ihrer stummen, höchstens für die damalige menschliche Erhebung unter dem Einflusse des Kosmos tönenden, ehernen Gestalt. Im Anblicke der stummen, nur vom Kosmos herein unter gewissen Voraussetzungen und Beziehungen durch die aufgehende Sonne tönend werdenden Sphinx, bildete sich heraus jene heilige Scheu der Seele, durch welche die Seele vorbereitet wurde zu verstehen die Sprache, die gesprochen werden mußte in der Zeit, als zu höherem Bewußtsein gebracht werden sollte, wie der Christus-Impuls nach und nach in die irdische Menschheitsentwickelung hereinkommt. Was die Sphingen noch nicht sagen konnten, wozu sie aber vorbereiteten, das sollte der Menschheit gesagt werden. In der Bildung der Wortbewegung liegt der Christus-Impuls. Dies wurde der Menschheit gesagt in den Worten:
Im Urbeginne war das Wort,
Und das Wort war bei Gott,
Und ein Gott war das Wort.
Dieses war im Urbeginne bei Gott.
Dort war es, wo alles entstanden ist,
Und nichts ist entstanden
Außer durch das Wort.
Im Worte war das Leben,
Und das Leben war
Das Licht der Menschen.
«Im Worte war das Leben, und das Leben war das Licht der Men schen» — dieses Wort steht an der Stelle, wo das Evangelium herausgeboren ist aus der vierten nachatlantischen Periode, wo vorbereitet durch die griechisch-lateinische Kultur die Menschen dahin gekommen waren, zu wiederholen in der vierten nachatlantischen Kulturperiode, was sich in der atlantischen Zeit zugetragen hat. Wie in der ägyptischen Zeit wiederholt wurde die Verehrung des Sich-Aufrichtens, so wurde jetzt wiederholt die Verehrung des Wortes. So wirken in die Menschheitsentwickelung hinein die übermenschlichen spirituellen Kräfte.
Ein Drittes, was das Kind lernen muß, bevor es eigentlich zum IchBewußtsein erwacht, ist das Vorstellen, das Denken. Dieses Denken war erst aufgespart für die Menschheit der nachatlantischen Zeit, ja sogar im Grunde genommen erst für die Menschheit der vierten nachatlantischen Periode. Vorher dachte man in Bildern. Das werde ich gerade wiederum darstellen in dem Buche, das demnächst erscheint: « Die Rätsel der Philosophie. » Das Kind denkt ja auch in Bildern. Den Gedanken zu denken ist der Menschheit erst gegeben, das GedankenDenken ist erst erwacht im 6. und 7. Jahrhundert vor Christus. Dann hat sich das Gedanken-Denken immer weiter ausgebildet. Jetzt stehen wir mittendrin. So ist die Entwickelung des Gedanken-Denkens, daß von diesem Gedanken-Denken unser Ich ergriffen wird. Daß auch das Denken verbunden sein kann mit dem Christus-Impuls, daß das Denken als solches nicht in Unordnung gekommen ist in seiner Wirksamkeit auf das Ich, dazu war das vierte Christus-Ereignis, das Mystetium von Golgatha, da. Und wenn unser Denken immer mehr in Ordnung kommen soll, wenn es sich immer mehr so entwickeln soll, daß unsere Gedanken nicht chaotisch durcheinander gehen, sondern von innerem Gefühl, innerer Empfindung durchdrungen, durchsetzt sind, wenn gesundes Wahrheitsdenken immer mehr und mehr entwickelt werden soll, so geschieht dies deshalb, weil durch das Mysterium von Golgatha, das vierte Christus-Ereignis, dieses Denken den Impuls dazu erlangt hat, dadurch erlangen konnte, daß der ChristusImpuls sich in die geistige Erdenatmosphäre ausgegossen hat.
Zum ersten Mal geschah dies in der lemurischen Zeit, da vonLuzifer der aufrechten Wesenheit des Menschen Gefahr drohte.
Zum zweiten Mal geschah es in der atlantischen Zeit. Da wurde der Mensch der Gefahr entrissen, die seiner Sprache drohte in bezug darauf, daß die Sprache Ausdruck von innen heraus ist. Die Gefahr bestand, daß die Sprache in Unordnung kommt.
Zum dritten Mal geschah es gegen Ende der atlantischen Zeit. Dadurch, daß der Christus die geistige Wesenheit des späteren Jesus von Nazareth durchdrang, wurde die Sprachbegabung, insoferne sie zum Zeichen wird für die Außendinge, durch den Christus vor einer Gefahr gerettet.
Die vierte Gefahr war für das Denken, das innerliche Vorstellen der Gedanken da. Der Mensch wird vor dieser Gefahr gerettet durch das Eindringen mit den Gedanken auf solche Formen, die in seinem Innern leben — wie das jetzt sein kann, wenn er es haben will und sich dazu vorbereitet in der Geisteswissenschaft -, auf solche Formen wie das, was ausgeflossen ist durch das Mysterium von Golgatha in die geistige Erdensphäre.
Wir sind jetzt so weit in der Menschheitsentwickelung, daß auch noch in einer anderen Form die ersten Worte des Johannes-Evangeliums ausgesprochen werden dürfen; daß sie ausgesprochen werden dürfen in der Form:
Im Urbeginne ist der Gedanke,
Und der Gedanke ist bei Gott,
Und ein Göttliches ist der Gedanke.
In ihm ist Leben,
Und das Leben soll werden das Licht meines Ich.
Und scheinen möge der göttliche Gedanke in mein Ich,
Daß die Finsternis meines Ich ergreife
Den göttlichen Gedanken.
Es wurde nicht ganz klar ausgesprochen, aber es wurde so gestrebt in der Menschheitsentwickelung.
Im 8. Jahrhundert der vorchristlichen Zeit begann die vierte nachatlantische Kultur. Etwa dreieinhalb Jahrhunderte danach war der Gedanke so weit reif, daß er in den griechischen Philosophen mit jener Klarheit ausgesprochen werden konnte, die dann zur platonischen Philosophie führte. Dann wurde das Leben der Menschen durchdrungen mit dem Christus-Impuls. Als das 15. nachchristliche Jahrhundert begann, da begann die fünfte nachatlantische Periode. Genauso lange, wie es dauerte vom Beginn der vierten nachatlantischen Periode bis zu einem Verständnis des Gedankens, so lange dauerte es vom Beginn der fünften nachatlantischen Periode bis zu einer bewußten Aussprache von der Natur des Gedankens, das heißt bis zu Flegel. Der menschliche Gedanke erlebte seinen Höhepunkt in Hegel mit dem Satze: Das Leben und Weben des Gedankens in der Wahrheit ist der wirkende Geist. - Das, was Hegel in so scheinbar ganz unverständlicher Weise sagt, man kann es aussprechen wirklich mit den Worten:
Im Urbeginne ist der Gedanke,
Und ein Unendliches ist der Gedanke,
Und das Leben des Gedankens ist das Licht des Ich.
Erfüllen möge der leuchtende Gedanke
Die Finsternis meines Ich,
Daß ihn die Finsternis meines Ich ergreife,
Den lebendigen Gedanken,
Und lebe und webe in seinem göttlichen Urbeginn.
So geht regelmäßig die Entwickelung der Menschheit. Noch nicht sehr weit ist die Menschheit gekommen, denn gerade Hegel wurde sehr viel verleumdet. Man kann wohl sagen: Und der leuchtende Gedanke schien zwar in die Finsternis, aber die Finsternis wollte nichts davon wissen. - Wenn man sein Leben begreifen lernt, das Leben des Gedankens, dann wird man verstehen, was der Menschheit obliegt in ihrem ferneren Dasein.
Aber zugleich haben wir, indem wir auf dem Boden der Geisteswissenschaft stehen, noch ein Weiteres. Spätere Epochen bereiten sich immer schon in den früheren Epochen vor. Und indem wir mittendrin stehen in der fünften nachatlantischen Periode, indem wir Geisteswissenschaft pflegen und immer mehr und mehr zum Verständnis des lebendigen Gedankens, des hellseherisch werdenden Denkens beizutragen haben, haben wir zugleich die sechste nachatlantische Periode vorzubereiten.
Wie in die Gedanken das Leben hereinströmt durch den ChristusImpuls, so wird er noch in etwas hereinströmen, was zur menschlichen Seelenfähigkeit gehört und was nicht verwechselt werden darf mit dem bloßen Gedanken. Aus dem Unbewußten heraus entwickelt das Kind seine Fähigkeiten. Indem es zum Ich-Bewußtsein kommt, tritt es in die Sphäre ein, wo es sich aneignen kann, wo es entwickeln muß dasjenige, was von außen hereinkommen kann durch den ChristusImpuls. Wir können, wenn das Kind gehen gelernt hat, wenn es sprechen gelernt hat, und wenn es beginnt mit dem Denkenlernen sich durchzuarbeiten zu dem Ich, wir können es allmählich schon sehen, wie der bewußte Christus-Impuls, der durch das Mysterium von Golgatha hereingekommen ist, auf das Kind wirkt. Die Menschheit kann heute in etwas anderes, was in ihrem Seelenvermögen liegt, den Christus-Impuls noch nicht hineinnehmen. Hineinzuleiten diesen Christus-Impuls in das aufrechte Gehen, in Sprechen und Denken, das ist durch dasjenige möglich, was seit Jahrtausenden für die Menschen da ist mit der Menschheitskultur. In ein viertes Element hineinzuleiten den Christus-Impuls, vorzubereiten dieses Hineinleiten in ein viertes menschliches Vermögen, daran müssen wir auch denken, wenn wir uns im rechten Sinn auf den Boden der Geisteswissenschaft stellen. Daran müssen wir auch denken! Wo hinein der ChristusImpuls noch nicht geleitet werden kann, wo hineingeleitet zu werden er sich aber vorbereitet, das ist die menschliche Erinnerung, das Erinnern des Menschen. Denn außer dem Aufrechtgehen und -stehen, dem Reden oder Sprechen, dem Denken, tritt jetzt die Christus-Kraft in das Erinnern ein. Wir können verstehen den Christus, wenn er durch die Evangelien zu uns spricht. Aber wir werden als Menschen erst dazu vorbereitet, daß der Christus auch eintritt in die Gedanken, die dann als erinnerte Gedanken und Vorstellungen in uns leben und sind und so weiter in uns leben. Und eine Zeit wird herankommen für die Menschheit, die allerdings erst vollständig werden wird in der sechsten größeren Periode der Menschheitsentwickelung, aber jetzt sich vorbereitet, wo die Menschen hinsehen werden auf das, was sie erlebt und erfahren haben und was als Erinnerung in ihnen lebt, und werden sehen können, daß in der Kraft des Erinnerns der Christus mitlebt. Durch jede Vorstellung wird der Christus sprechen können. Und auch wenn wir unsere Vorstellungen in der Erinnerung wiederbeleben, so wird in der Erinnerung, in dem, was so eng, so intim mit uns verbunden ist wie unsere Erinnerung, der Christus mit verbunden sein. Zurückblicken wird der Mensch können auf sein Leben und sagen wird er sich: So wie ich mich erinnere, so wie die Kraft des Gedächtnisses in mir lebt, so lebt in diesem Gedächtnis der hineingegossene ChristusImpuls. Der Weg, der den Menschen geboten wird, immer mehr und mehr wahr zu machen die Worte: Nicht ich, der Christus in mir, — der Weg wird dadurch geebnet, daß in die Erinnerungskraft allmählich der Christus-Impuls einziehen wird. Er ist jetzt noch nicht darinnen. Wenn er darinnen sein wird, wenn nicht nur im Verständnis des Menschen der Christus-Impuls lebt, sondern wenn der Christus-Impuls sich über den ganzen Saum, über den ganzen Streifen von Erinnerungen ausgießen wird, dann wird der Mensch zum Beispiel nicht nur angewiesen sein darauf, aus äußeren Dokumenten Geschichte zu lernen, denn dann wird sich seine Erinnerungskraft erweitern. Der Christus wird in dieser Erinnerung leben. Und der Mensch wird dadurch, daß der Christus in seine Erinnerungskraft eingezogen ist, dadurch, daß der Christus in der Erinnerungskraft lebt, der Mensch wird dadurch wissen, wie bis zum Mysterium von Golgatha hin der Christus außerirdisch gewirkt hat, wie er es vorbereitet hat und durchgegangen ist durch dieses Mysterium von Golgatha, und wie er als Impuls weiterwirkt in der Geschichte. So wahr und wirklich wird der Mensch das überschauen, wie jetzt im gewöhnlichen Leben die Erinnerung da ist. Man wird die irdische Entwickelung der Menschheit nicht anders überschauen können innerlich als so, daß man dann den Christus-Impuls im Mittelpunkt erblickt. Alle Erinnerungskraft wird durchsetzt und zugleich verstärkt werden durch das Eindringen des Christus-Impulses in die Gedächtniskraft, in die Erinnerungskraft. In der Zukunft kann für uns, die wir das Christentum lebendig erfassen sollen, auch das noch Geltung haben:
Im Urbeginne ist die Erinnerung,
Und die Erinnerung lebt weiter,
Und göttlich ist die Erinnerung.
Und die Erinnerung ist Leben,
Und dieses Leben ist das Ich des Menschen,
Das im Menschen selber strömt.
Nicht er allein, der Christus in ihm.
Wenn er sich an das göttliche Leben erinnert,
Ist in seiner Erinnerung der Christus,
Und als strahlendes Erinnerungsleben
Wird der Christus leuchten
In jede unmittelbar gegenwärtige Finsternis.
Wir werden sagen können: Der Christus ist in unserem inneren Seelenleben. Das wird mancher von uns empfinden dadurch, daß wir lernen, uns mit dem Christus-Impuls zu verbinden durch die Erinnerung, wie der Mensch als Kind gelernt hat sich aufzurichten, zu sprechen, indem er sich mit dem Christus-Impuls verbunden hat. Mancher von uns empfindet auch dadurch, daß wir unser Erinnerungsvermögen in dem Zustand, wie wir es jetzt haben, wie eine Vorbereitung betrachten, etwas, das in Unordnung kommen würde in Zukunft, wenn es nicht den Willen hätte, sich von dem ChristusImpuls durchdringen zu lassen. Würde es einen Materialismus auf der Erde geben, der den Christus ableugnet, dann würde die Erinnerung in Unordnung kommen. Dann würden immer mehr und mehr Menschen auftreten, deren Erinnerung chaotisch würde, die dumpfer und dumpfer sein würden in ihrem finsteren Ich-Bewußtsein, wenn nicht Erinnerung in dieses finstere Ich-Bewußtsein hereinleuchten würde. Unser Erinnerungsvermögen kann nur dann sich richtig entwickeln, wenn der Christus-Impuls richtig geschaut wird. Dann wird Geschichte wie eine lebendige Erinnerung so leben, daß in die Erinnerung das Verständnis für die wahren Geschehnisse dringt. Dann wird die menschliche Erinnerung den Mittelpunkt des Weltgeschehens verstehen. Dann macht sich für den Menschen das Schauen geltend. Die gewöhnliche Erinnerung, die auf ein Leben sich nur richtet, die wird sich ausdehnen auf die vorhergehenden Inkarnationen. Erinnerung ist jetzt eine Vorbereitung, aber ausgestaltet wird sie durch den Christus. Ob wir nach außen blicken, wie wir uns als Kind heraufentwickelt haben noch unbewußt, ob wir dann nach innen blicken, ob wir durch weitergehende Vertiefung unseres Innern bis zu dem, was als unser Inneres in der Erinnerung bleibt, hineinblicken, überall sehen wir die lebendige Kraft und Wirksamkeit des Christus-Impulses.
In dem neuen Christus-Ereignis, das jetzt nicht physisch, aber ätherisch herankommt, das zusammenhängt mit der ersten Entfachung der Erinnerungsfähigkeit, mit der ersten Entfachung des Durchchristetwerdens der Erinnerung, wird dieses Christus-Ereignis so sein, daß der Christus als engelartiges Wesen an den Menschen herantreten wird. Darauf müssen wir uns vorbereiten.
So soll uns Geisteswissenschaft nicht etwa bloß mit Theorien bereichern, sondern sie soll in uns etwas ergießen, was uns fähig macht, dasjenige, was in der Welt herantritt an uns, und das, was wir selber sind, mit anderen Empfindungen und Gefühlen aufzunehmen. Unser Gefühls- und Empfindungsleben kann bereichert werden, wenn wir in richtigem Sinne durch Geisteswissenschaft eindringen in das Wesen des Christus-Impulses und sein Walten im Menschen und in der geistigen Wesenheit des Menschen. Gut ist es, wenn wir oft daran denken:
Im Urbeginne war die Kraft der Erinnerung.
Die Kraft der Erinnerung soll werden göttlich,
Und ein Göttliches soll werden die Kraft der Erinnerung.
Alles, was im Ich entsteht,
Soll werden so,
Daß es ein Entstandenes ist
Aus der durchchristlichten, durchgöttlichten Erinnerung.
In ihr soll sein das Leben,
Und in ihr soll sein das strahlende Licht,
Das aus dem sich erinnernden Denken
In die Finsternis der Gegenwart hereinstrahlt.
Und die Finsternis so, wie sie gegenwärtig ist,
Möge begreifen das Licht der göttlich gewordenen Erinnerung.
Wenn wir den Sinn solcher Worte in uns aufnehmen, dann nehmen wir etwas auf, was sich für uns Menschen geziemt aufzunehmen. Wie die Pflanze den Keim für das nächste Pflanzenleben bildet, so lernen wir in uns empfinden nicht nur mit den Früchten, die uns aus früheren Inkarnationen kommen, sondern so zu empfinden, daß wir verstehen, herüberzugehen in die folgenden Inkarnationen. In den folgenden Inkarnationen würde es um unser Erinnerungsvermögen schlecht stehen, wenn wir uns nicht mit dem Christus-Impuls durchdringen würden. Noch ist das Denken im spärlichsten Maße durchdrungen von dem Christus-Impuls und schon tritt er heran an die Erinnerung. Lernen wir aus der Geisteswissenschaft heraus nicht nur für den zeitlichen Menschen zu leben, der zwischen Geburt und T'od lebt, sondern lernen wir für jenen Menschen zu leben, der durch immer wiederkehrende Inkarnationen geht. Und lernen wir durch Geisteswissenschaft, was uns sein kann für das volle Ausleben der eigenen menschlichen Seele das richtige Verstehen und Verständnis, das richtige Empfinden, das richtige Fühlen des stärksten Impulses in der ganzen Menschheitsentwickelung: des Christus-Impulses.
The Christ Impulse in the History of Time and Its Working in Human Beings
In our time, it is becoming increasingly important for souls who are led to spiritual science through their karma to gain a deep impression of what we can call understanding of the mystery of Golgotha. The friends who were present at our last branch meetings have already heard something about the fact that this mystery of Golgotha has a spiritual history, that something preceded it, that it is, as it were, the conclusion of a series of events. Our dear friends have also heard that during the evolution of our earth, the Christ being was united with the body of Jesus of Nazareth, and that through this, a being passed over the fields of our earth, of whom we can say: Through this being, the presence of the cosmic Christ being took place on the physical plane within our earthly existence.
It is significant for the entire future of human evolution that humanity gains more and more understanding of the mystery of Golgotha, and that more and more of this understanding flows into reverence and loving, heartfelt devotion to what took place in the mystery of Golgotha for the evolution of humanity. We know — this has also been said repeatedly and is well known — that two Jesus boys were born in preparation for the mystery of Golgotha. One was Jesus with the Zarathustra ego, the other — from the Nathanic line of the House of David — was a very special being. We know that in the twelfth year of the Nathanic Jesus boy, the I of Zarathustra passed over from the other, the Solomonic Jesus boy, and that between the twelfth and thirtieth years, this Nathanic Jesus prepared himself with the I of Zarathustra to receive, through the event indicated by the baptism in the Jordan, to receive the Christ being that now permeates this Jesus of Nazareth and that poured itself out into the spiritual sphere of the earth at his death, so that humanity can become more and more partaker of that which, starting from the Mystery of Golgotha, can flow through all souls and all hearts as spiritual forces.
Now I have already said that this mystery of Golgotha was in a certain sense prepared three times before for the salvation of humanity: once in the ancient Lemurian epoch, then in the Atlantean epoch, then once more toward the end of the Atlantean epoch—that was three times—and then the fourth time as we know it at the beginning of our era in the post-Atlantean epoch. What we call the mystery of Golgotha took place solely on the physical plane; the other events, which were preparatory, took place entirely in the spiritual world. But the forces that were formed in the process, that which happened, flowed down into the earthly souls and bodies for the salvation of humanity. And in all these preparatory events leading up to the mystery of Golgotha, it was again the same being who was then born as the Nathanic Jesus child, who was permeated by the Christ being. That is the essence of the mystery of Golgotha, that this Jesus being, who grew up as the Nathanic boy, was permeated by the Christ being. But this later Nathanic Jesus being was also present in the three earlier events, only it was not incarnated as a physical human being. It lived as a spiritual, archangel-like being in the spiritual worlds. And in the spiritual worlds, it was permeated by the Christ being as a precursor to the mystery of Golgotha during the Lemurian period and twice during the Atlantean period.
So we can say that there were, as it were, three angelic lives in the spiritual world. The being who led this angelic and archangelic life was basically the same being who was later born as a human being and described as the boy Jesus in the Gospel of Luke. Three times this angelic being, who later sacrificed himself as a human being, sacrificed himself for the penetration of the Christ impulse. Just as we have in Christ Jesus a human being permeated by the Christ impulse, so we can say that we have three times before had an angel permeated by the Christ impulse. And just as what happened through the Mystery of Golgotha streamed out into the spiritual atmosphere of the earth, so what happened through the first three events streamed in, albeit from the cosmos. When we look at the course of human evolution and see how the mystery of Golgotha stands at the center of this evolution, we can actually say to ourselves: With this mystery of Golgotha, such a center of earthly evolution is given. Everything that happened before points preparatory to this mystery of Golgotha. And everything that has happened since is a gradual inflow of the forces of the mystery of Golgotha into human souls and human hearts.
If we examine more closely which part of the human being has been given that which flows out from the power of the mystery of Golgotha, we can say: When it opens itself, the power of the mystery of Golgotha flows into the human being, into that part of the human being which can develop its consciousness in the world of the physical plane. Is this not so? We cannot yet speak to a child who has just been born about Christ Jesus. There is no way we can make the child understand what Christ Jesus is. And if we were to let the child's eyes linger on any image, be it a picture such as the Sistine Madonna with the baby Jesus or the crucifix, we would notice, if we could look into the child's soul, that in the very earliest stages of childhood we cannot yet reach it with our external means of education on the physical plane. From the time when the child begins to babble, we can accustom it to pronounce the name of Christ, we can teach it ideas that point to Christ. But we will not yet feel ready for a deeper understanding in the heart in the early stages of human childhood. And one thing is clear to anyone who is able to shine the light of spiritual science into the child's mind: the weakest way in which we can bring about the dawn of Christ consciousness through external means of education is the weakest way that actually occurs from the moment the child approaches the point in its life to which it will later look back: when its ego-consciousness awakens. Certainly, there will not be much understanding in the first years after the ego-consciousness awakens. But everything we convey about Christ without introducing dogma, everything we convey in such a way that the words and ideas contain something of the life of the Christ impulse, will benefit the person who grows up from this child throughout their entire later life. After the awakening of ego-consciousness, we can already do individual things, even if only a dawning consciousness is present. After the awakening of ego-consciousness, for example, even if we cannot yet begin to influence the child by physical means, the child looks at the Sistine Madonna and the cross with Christ on it in a completely different way than before. For just as the mystery of Golgotha has entered into the earthly evolution of humanity, so is it destined to work in the progress of the spiritual life on the physical plane. And actually, the human being only consciously enters the physical plane when his ego awakens. What happens before that?
Three things precede the awakening of the I in the child, three things which I have already pointed out in earlier lectures, three things which are of tremendous importance. The child learns to walk, that is, it learns to raise itself from a position in which it is still incapable of directing its body away from the earth and up into the heights of the cosmos. It learns to move from one position to another, which is what primarily distinguishes humans from animals. It learns through its own inner strength to stand upright, to turn its gaze away from the earthly, to which the animal must nevertheless have directed it through its entire destiny and form, for the exceptions are only apparent. It is the upright position that the child learns before the consciousness of the I awakens. In our present post-Atlantean life, we are truly repeating the things that we as human beings first acquired over time. What we acquired gradually during the ancient Lemurian period, learning to walk upright, learning to stand upright, we repeat before our ego consciousness awakens, now in childhood. This is pressed into the period when it does not yet depend on our consciousness, when it still works as an unconscious upright force. Those animals that have an almost vertical, almost upward-facing gait have arranged their entire organism in such a way that they naturally assume this position, which is not entirely upright. However, like many comparisons, this one would also be misleading. In the first period of his life, before his ego-consciousness awakens, man is called upon to bring himself into an upright, vertical position out of the predisposition of this ego, to lift himself out of the position in which he still was in the old lunar period. At that time, the direction of his spine was parallel to the surface of the moon and was horizontal in its main line. In the old Lemurian era, humans learned to transform the direction of the moon into the direction of the earth. This came about because, during the earth's development, the spirits of form first instilled the ego into humans from their own substance. And the first manifestation of this instilling of the ego is the inner force through which humans raise themselves up. In this way, humans are torn away from their position on the earth. The Earth itself has spiritual forces that can flow through the spine when it remains horizontal in natural growth, as in the animal body. But the Earth has no forces of its own to serve the human being, who can be vertically oriented through his ego, whose consciousness awakens later. In order for human beings to develop harmoniously while walking upright and vertically, forces must flow in from the cosmos, from outside the earth. Lucifer and Ahriman could have thrown all human development into disorder by tearing humans away from the spiritual forces of the earth through their upright position, had the first Christ event not occurred in the ancient Lemurian epoch.
In this ancient Lemurian period, in the realm closest to our earthly realm, the Christ being penetrated that being, but as a kind of angelic being, who later became the Nathanic Jesus. This was a preliminary stage of the mystery of Golgotha. The result of this was that in this ancient Lemurian time—but in ethereal, spiritual heights—the later Nathanic Jesus, who would otherwise have had the form of an angel, naturally took on not a physical but an ethereal human form. In the super-earthly region—but in the next super-earthly region—Jesus of Nazareth can be found as an ethereal angelic form. By passing through with Christ, he took on an ethereal human form. This brought something new into the cosmos, which now radiates onto the Earth and enables human beings, in their physical Earthly form, into which the power of the ethereal, super-Earthly Christ Being flowed, to protect themselves from the destruction that would have had to penetrate if it had not been able to shine in from the cosmos and permeate human beings so that the formative power that enables them to become upright, orderly beings lives within them. Disorder would have had to come if the physical power of the sun had not flowed in with the power of that formation, that shaping, which can shine in as a result of the first Christ event having taken place. What human beings received through this had been living in the development of humanity since the ancient Lemurian epoch. And we look correctly at a developing human child when, at the moment when the child rises from its crawling, sliding, helpless state and stands or walks for the first time, when we say at that moment: This can only happen for the good and salvation of humanity because the first Christ event took place in the ancient Lemurian era, because the one who, as the Nathanic Jesus, permeated himself with Christ, took on a human-etheric form in the Lemurian era as a spiritual-etheric being through his permeation with Christ.
Yes, spiritual science is there to enrich our feelings. Such a feeling, which can live in our soul when we see a child learn to stand upright and walk, such a feeling certainly has deep religious roots. We should remember later, more often, why the child walks, and then think how this is thanks to the Christ impulse. Then, through spiritual science, we will have enriched our worldview and acquired a feeling for what our environment is that we could not otherwise have. Through spiritual science, we perceive, as it were, the protectors and guardians of childlike growth and childlike becoming. We perceive how the Christ force radiates around this childlike being and childlike becoming.
From my account of the Akashic Records for the Lemurian period, where I speak of the Lemurian ancestors, you will have seen that these ancestors were mute. The Atlantean human being was actually the first to learn to speak. How this came about is explained in those essays on the Akashic Records. This is the second of the abilities that the child acquires before the actual ego-consciousness awakens: learning to speak. The awakening of ego-consciousness only follows after learning to speak. Learning to speak is based entirely on a kind of imitation, for which, however, the predispositions lie deep in human nature. This speech is, in turn, a human ability that has entered into earthly human beings through their evolution. Through the spirits of form permeating and penetrating them, they are able to speak a language and live their earthly lives on the physical plane. In this way, they wrest themselves from the spiritual forces at work on Earth through two elements. Animals do not really learn to speak; they are permeated by these spiritual forces of the earth. Even speaking through gestures is not the same as human speech. And if one were to teach animals to speak in a similar way through training or other means, conditions would arise outside their bodies that would first have to be discussed by spiritual science, which is beyond the scope of this discussion. Let us remain with the normal development of the human being and say that this human speech was already predisposed in the human being from divine heights through what the spirits of form have poured into him. Let us remain with this and look at how the human being has transformed himself from a mute being into a speaking being. In this way, he has made himself independent of the forces that flow through the earth spiritually, just as he made himself independent of the first stream through his upright posture. Through the influence of Lucifer and Ahriman, everything in speech would have become base if human beings had been left to the earth alone, if cosmic spiritual influences had not poured into them from above. Human beings would have developed their entire culture in this way, all their physical organs, larynx, tongue, throat, and so on, even the deeper organs such as the heart and so forth, insofar as they are connected with them. Human beings would have developed them in this way in the Atlantean epoch if nothing had happened through Christ, so that human beings would have been capable only of to utter in poor babbling — like the Sibyls or mediums — that which caused them selfish pain, joy, pleasure, and lust. Human beings would have been able to produce much more artificial sounds than animals, but in their sounds they would have found only expressions for what lived within them. They would have found living words to express what goes on in the organism as physical processes. The whole language would have become a sum of interjections. Whereas we now compress our words of feeling into a small measure, the art of human speech, with all its complexity, would have developed only to the level of interjections. This was averted by human development. The disorder in this power of speech—insofar as this disorder expresses the inner life of the human being—was averted by the second Christ event, in that this entity in the etheric realm, which later became the Nathanic Jesus child, permeated itself a second time with the Christ entity, and that it took on such a being that it now permeated the organs of the human body in such a way that human beings became capable of uttering something other than mere words of sensation. The fact that they became capable of grasping the objective was made possible by the second Christ event.
And still the language, the power of speech, the human ability to translate emotions into words, was in danger. Through the second Christ event, it could well have happened that human beings would not only have found sounds, interjections, and words of feeling for their inner life, but that they would have been able to detach in a certain way what they had brought forth as inner speech movement. But to designate external things through words in such a way that the words could be correct signs for the external things was still endangered by the Luciferic and Ahrimanic influences until the Atlantean epoch. Then the third Christ event took place. For the third time, the being in the spiritual heights, who later was born as the Nathanic Jesus, connected with the Christ being and poured itself once again with the powers it had now taken on into the human faculty of speech. The power of this Christ Jesus being now permeated the organs of the human body a second time, insofar as these organs express themselves in the power of speech. This gave the power of speech the ability to create real signs with words for what the external environment is, and thereby to create language as a means of communication across the individual areas of humanity. The child would never be able to learn to speak if these two Christ events had not occurred in the Atlantean era. And we enrich our perception through spiritual science when we consider how, as the child begins to speak and becomes more and more perfect in speech, the Christ impulses are at work in the unconscious, how the Christ force lives in speech as a protective and nurturing force.
Then came the post-Atlantean era, after the three Christ events had taken place, which I have described again from a certain point of view in their influence on human development.
In post-Atlantean development, the peoples who belonged primarily to the stage of human development we call the Egyptian-Chaldean culture had the task of repeating what had happened for humanity in the ancient Lemurian epoch, but this time with consciousness. Quite unconsciously, human beings learn to be upright beings in the Lemurian epoch and to be speaking beings in the Atlantean epoch. Quite unconsciously, because their thinking faculty had not yet awakened in this epoch, they take in the Christ impulse. In the post-Atlantean epoch, they were to be slowly led to understand what they had unconsciously taken in in earlier times. What enabled them to look up into cosmic heights was the Christ impulse. They experienced this unconsciously, as they had to in the Lemurian epoch. Then, not yet fully conscious, but as if in preparation for full consciousness, the peoples of Egypt were to be led to worship that which lives in the uprightness of the human being. The initiates who influenced Egyptian culture ensured that the people learned to worship this by having them build the pyramids, which rise from the earth into the cosmos. Even now, we can still admire how this power of uplifting was expressed through the influence of cosmic forces on the entire form and location of the pyramids. The obelisks were to be erected so that human beings might begin to understand what the power of uplifting is. The wonderful hieroglyphs in the pyramids and on the obelisks, which were intended to point to Christ, awakened the super-earthly forces from the Lemurian era. But even with such a dark understanding of the upward force, the Egyptians could not comprehend the power of speech. First, their minds had to be properly trained for perception so that in later times people could understand the mystery of how Christ lives in the gift of speech. This was to be received with the most sacred reverence in the maturing human soul. The hierophants, the initiates of Egyptian culture, ensured this in a wonderful way by placing the mysterious Sphinx with its silent, bronze figure, which resounded at most for the human elevation of that time under the influence of the cosmos. At the sight of the silent Sphinx, which only resounded from the cosmos under certain conditions and relationships through the rising sun, that sacred awe of the soul developed, through which the soul was prepared to understand the language that had to be spoken at the time when it was necessary to bring to a higher consciousness how the Christ impulse gradually enters into the earthly evolution of humanity. What the sphinxes could not yet say, but for which they were preparing, was to be said to humanity. The Christ impulse lies in the formation of the movement of the word. This was said to humanity in the words:
In the beginning was the Word,
And the Word was with God,
And the Word was God.
This was in the beginning with God.
There it was, where everything came into being,
And nothing came into being
Except through the Word.
In the Word was life,
And the life was
The light of men.
“In the Word was life, and the life was the light of men” — these words appear at the point where the Gospel emerged from the fourth post-Atlantean period, when, prepared by Greek-Latin culture, human beings had come to repeat in the fourth post-Atlantean cultural period what had taken place in the Atlantean epoch. Just as the veneration of rising up was repeated in the Egyptian era, so now the veneration of the word was repeated. In this way, superhuman spiritual forces work into human development.
A third thing that the child must learn before it actually awakens to self-consciousness is imagination, thinking. This thinking was first reserved for humanity in the post-Atlantean era, and in fact, basically only for humanity in the fourth post-Atlantean period. Before that, people thought in images. I will describe this again in the book that will be published soon: “The Riddles of Philosophy.” Children also think in images. Thinking thoughts was only given to humanity in the 6th and 7th centuries BC. Since then, thinking has continued to develop. We are now in the midst of this development. The development of thinking is such that our ego is seized by this thinking. That thinking can also be connected with the Christ impulse, that thinking as such has not been thrown into disorder in its effect on the ego, this was the purpose of the fourth Christ event, the Mystery of Golgotha. And if our thinking is to become more and more orderly, if it is to develop more and more so that our thoughts do not become chaotic and confused, but are permeated and interwoven with inner feeling and inner sensation, if healthy thinking about truth is to develop more and more, this happens because through the Mystery of Golgotha, the fourth Christ event, this thinking has gained the impulse to do so, has been able to gain it through the Christ impulse pouring out into the spiritual atmosphere of the earth.
This happened for the first time in the Lemurian epoch, when Lucifer threatened the upright nature of human beings.
It happened for the second time in the Atlantean epoch. Then human beings were rescued from the danger that threatened their language in relation to the fact that language is an expression from within. The danger was that language would become disordered.
The third time it happened was toward the end of the Atlantean epoch. Through Christ's penetration of the spiritual being of the later Jesus of Nazareth, the gift of language, insofar as it becomes a sign for external things, was saved from danger by Christ.
The fourth danger was to thinking, to the inner conception of thoughts. Human beings are saved from this danger by penetrating with their thoughts into forms that live within them — as this is now possible if they want it and prepare themselves for it in spiritual science — into forms such as those that flowed out through the mystery of Golgotha into the spiritual sphere of the earth.
We are now so far advanced in human evolution that the first words of the Gospel of John may be spoken in another form, that they may be spoken in the form:
In the beginning is the thought,
And the thought is with God,
And the thought is divine.
In it is life,
And life shall become the light of my being.
And may the divine thought shine in my being,
That the darkness of my being may grasp
The divine thought.
It was not expressed quite clearly, but it was strived for in human evolution.
In the 8th century BC, the fourth post-Atlantean culture began. About three and a half centuries later, the idea had matured to such an extent that it could be expressed by the Greek philosophers with the clarity that then led to Platonic philosophy. Then the life of human beings was permeated with the Christ impulse. When the 15th century AD began, the fifth post-Atlantean period began. Just as long as it took from the beginning of the fourth post-Atlantean period to an understanding of the idea, so long did it take from the beginning of the fifth post-Atlantean period to a conscious expression of the nature of the idea, that is, to Flegel. Human thought reached its peak in Hegel with the sentence: “The life and weaving of thought in truth is the working spirit.” What Hegel says in such a seemingly incomprehensible way can actually be expressed in the following words:
In the beginning is the thought,
And infinite is thought,
And the life of thought is the light of the self.
May the luminous thought fill
The darkness of my self,
That the darkness of my self may seize it,
The living thought,
And live and breathe in its divine beginning.
This is how the development of humanity regularly proceeds. Humanity has not yet come very far, for Hegel in particular was greatly slandered. One can well say: And the shining thought did indeed shine into the darkness, but the darkness wanted nothing to do with it. When one learns to understand one's life, the life of thought, then one will understand what lies ahead for humanity in its future existence.
But at the same time, standing on the ground of spiritual science, we have something else. Later epochs are always already being prepared in earlier epochs. And by standing in the middle of the fifth post-Atlantean epoch, by cultivating spiritual science and contributing more and more to the understanding of living thought, of thinking that is becoming clairvoyant, we have at the same time to prepare the sixth post-Atlantean epoch.
Just as life flows into thoughts through the Christ impulse, so will it flow into something that belongs to the human soul and must not be confused with mere thought. The child develops its abilities out of the unconscious. As it comes to self-awareness, it enters the sphere where it can acquire, where it must develop, that which can come in from outside through the Christ impulse. When the child has learned to walk, when it has learned to speak, and when it begins to learn to think its way to the I, we can gradually see how the conscious Christ impulse that has come in through the Mystery of Golgotha is working on the child. Humanity today cannot yet take in the Christ impulse in something else that lies within its soul capacity. To lead this Christ impulse into upright walking, speaking, and thinking is possible through what has been available to human beings for thousands of years in human culture. We must also think about introducing the Christ impulse into a fourth element, preparing this introduction into a fourth human faculty, if we want to stand on the ground of spiritual science in the right sense. We must also think about this! Where the Christ impulse cannot yet be introduced, but where it is preparing to be introduced, is in human memory, in human recollection. For apart from walking and standing upright, talking or speaking, thinking, the Christ force now enters into memory. We can understand Christ when he speaks to us through the Gospels. But as human beings we are only being prepared for Christ to also enter into our thoughts, which then live and exist in us as remembered thoughts and ideas and continue to live in us. And a time will come for humanity, which will only be complete in the sixth major period of human development, but is now being prepared, when people will look back on what they have experienced and what lives in them as memory, and will be able to see that Christ lives on in the power of memory. Christ will be able to speak through every idea. And even when we revive our ideas in our memory, Christ will be connected to them, to that which is so closely, so intimately connected with us as our memory. Human beings will be able to look back on their lives and say to themselves: Just as I remember, just as the power of memory lives in me, so the Christ impulse poured into this memory lives in it. The path offered to human beings to make the words “Not I, but Christ in me” more and more true is paved by the gradual entry of the Christ impulse into the power of memory. It is not yet there. When it is there, when the Christ impulse lives not only in human understanding, but when the Christ impulse pours out over the entire fringe, over the entire strip of memories, then human beings will no longer be dependent on learning history from external documents, for then their power of memory will expand. Christ will live in this memory. And through Christ entering into their power of memory, through Christ living in their power of memory, human beings will know how Christ worked extraterrestrially up to the Mystery of Golgotha, how He prepared it and went through this Mystery of Golgotha, and how He continues to work as an impulse in history. Human beings will see this as truly and really as they now see memory in ordinary life. It will not be possible to see the earthly development of humanity inwardly in any other way than with the Christ impulse at the center. All memory will be permeated and at the same time strengthened by the penetration of the Christ impulse into the power of memory. In the future, for those of us who are to grasp Christianity in a living way, the following will also be valid:
In the beginning is memory,
And memory lives on,
And divine is memory.
And memory is life,
And this life is the I of the human being,
That flows within man himself.
Not he alone, but Christ within him.
When he remembers the divine life,
Christ is in his memory,
And as a radiant life of memory,
Christ will shine
In every immediate darkness.
We will be able to say: Christ is in our inner soul life. Some of us will feel this by learning to connect with the Christ impulse through memory, just as human beings as children learned to stand up and speak by connecting with the Christ impulse. Some of us also feel this because we regard our memory in its present state as a preparation, something that would fall into disorder in the future if it did not have the will to allow itself to be permeated by the Christ impulse. If there were a materialism on earth that denied Christ, then memory would fall into disorder. Then more and more people would appear whose memory would become chaotic, who would become duller and duller in their dark ego-consciousness, if memory did not shine into this dark ego-consciousness. Our memory can only develop properly if the Christ impulse is seen correctly. Then history will live as a living memory, so that understanding of the true events will penetrate into memory. Then human memory will understand the center of world events. Then seeing will become important for people. Ordinary memory, which is directed only toward one life, will expand to include previous incarnations. Memory is now a preparation, but it is developed by Christ. Whether we look outward, at how we developed as children, still unconsciously, or whether we look inward, whether we look inward through further deepening of our inner being to what remains in our memory as our inner being, everywhere we see the living power and effectiveness of the Christ impulse.
In the new Christ event, which is now approaching not physically but etherically, which is connected with the first awakening of the faculty of memory, with the first awakening of the Christification of memory, this Christ event will be such that Christ will approach human beings as an angelic being. We must prepare ourselves for this.
Thus, spiritual science should not merely enrich us with theories, but should pour something into us that enables us to take in what comes toward us in the world and what we ourselves are with different sensations and feelings. Our emotional and sensory life can be enriched if we penetrate in the right sense, through spiritual science, into the essence of the Christ impulse and its working in human beings and in the spiritual being of human beings. It is good to think often of the following:
In the beginning was the power of memory.
The power of memory shall become divine,
And the power of memory shall become divine.
Everything that arises in the I,
Shall become such
That it is something that has arisen
From memory that is permeated by Christ and by the divine.
In it shall be life,
And in it shall be the radiant light,
Which from the remembering mind
Shines into the darkness of the present.
And the darkness as it is at present,
May it comprehend the light of the memory that has become divine.
When we take in the meaning of such words, we take in something that is fitting for us as human beings to take in. Just as a plant forms the seed for its next life, so we learn to feel within ourselves not only with the fruits that come to us from previous incarnations, but also to feel in such a way that we understand how to pass over into the following incarnations. In the following incarnations, our memory would be in a poor state if we did not permeate ourselves with the Christ impulse. Thinking is still only sparsely permeated by the Christ impulse, and already it is approaching memory. Let us learn from spiritual science not only to live for the temporal human being who lives between birth and death, but let us learn to live for the human being who goes through recurring incarnations. And let us learn through spiritual science what can be right for us in order to live out our own human soul to the fullest: the right understanding, the right perception, the right feeling of the strongest impulse in the entire evolution of humanity: the Christ impulse.
